Shanghai city has a nickname from the west ‘Paris of the East’, transforming from a village to market town during the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279) and continue to upgrade its status to became a city for the first time in 1927. Chinese name for Shanghainese ‘Zanhae’ and for Mandarin ‘Shanghai’.
The city located at the mouth of the Yangtze River Delta in eastern China. Once a fishing village and grew itself in the 19th
century to established and flourished as a centre of commerce between east and west. In the 1930s the city became the undisputed financial hub of the Asia Pacific.
On the west bank of the Huangpu Jiang River, this flows intothe Changjiang (Yangtze) 28 km further upstream lies Shanghai City. The Northern part of Shanghai is separated from the rest of the city by the Wusong Jiang River. Shanghai is a special city in every respect. Westerners lent Shanghai its appearance, making it more western than Chinese. Multi story high buildings reach skyward; there are vast hotel complexes, villas and palaces that a visitor from the west can more easily identify than a temple. They were built according to Western architectural style by former business and military men from all over the world.
The colonialists have long gone, but their buildings remain with the bustling life and activities of a large Chinese city prevail around them. A special kind of people lives there, brisk, smart, flexible and makes more of their appearance than other Chinese.
